Chapter 9

The Frozen Ones

Crystalline frigidity coaxed an open mind to follow.

“I can’t wait here any longer.”

David stood and headed in the direction Tonya and Keven had gone when they disappeared. This time he would run further in their footprints, if he could still see them with the breeze blowing.

Becca sat up and shook her head.

“We have to find out where Tonya and Keven went, how they got there. They’re probably at home now, wondering what happened to us while we’re sitting here and crying over some strangers frozen in that ice. We gotta get going,” he said, motioning to the two girls to follow him.

“NO! You can’t go that way!” Becca jumped up and ran toward David.

She wasn’t able to tell him, yet. Not that way, it would be too devastating.

“What do you mean I can’t go that way? Get over it, Becca. We can’t let those unfortunate people stop us from leaving. Nothing’s gonna happen to us if we go over there. They’re already dead,” David reasoned.

Becca was horrified at the thought. “No, don’t say that! You can’t follow in Tonya and Keven’s footsteps!”

“Why not?” he asked. “You’ve been so afraid to do anything your whole life. I told you guys not to go down that trail, but you did it anyway. And now that you did, and things got a bit mixed up, you’re afraid to move! Grow up, Becca! Life has challenges and sometimes we make mistakes! Sometimes you have to fight—”

“David, you don’t understand!” Becca cried.

“You don’t understand!” David retorted. “If we don’t do this, we could die. Lyn could die, and you could sit here and watch her do it. We have t’ do something, Becca!”

Becca shook her head.

“We have to do something,” he repeated. “They could be home by now and we should be trying to figure out how to be there with them. It’s sad what happened to those people, horrible, but if you don’t stop obsessing on it and start thinking about how to do what Tonya and Keven did, we might become human popsicles ourselves, only above the ice.”

David turned and started toward the path. Angry at how he had patronized her, and without other options, Becca reached for his arm and turned him toward her.

“Why don’t you listen to someone for once in your life? You can’t rush into something you know nothing about just because you feel guilty over how you’ve treated your broth—”

Becca stopped in mid sentence and put her hand to her mouth. The look on his face sent a sharp pain through her chest as she lowered her hand to his arm again.

“David,” she pleaded.

David yanked his sleeve from her and stood silent for a moment. The creases in his forehead drew deep. He swallowed back the words and digested them for a moment before speaking again. The truth of her impulsive revelation caused his hands to tremble.

“Okay, I’m listening. Why shouldn’t we try to get home the way Tonya and Keven did?” he asked with controlled anger.
